Arriving in Sri Lanka is about to get significantly faster and smoother. As part of a major modernizing drive across the country’s aviation infrastructure, Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake is undergoing a digital transformation with the deployment of 12 state-of-the-art automated passenger clearance gates (E-Gates).
Following an initial rollout of four automated gates approved in May 2025, the Cabinet has officially approved the procurement and installation of eight additional units. This expansion brings the total to 12 high-tech E-Gates across the airport’s arrival and departure terminals.
The Automated Border Control (ABC) system originally launched in early 2026 through a partnership with Japan and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). While the initial phase was restricted to Sri Lankan passport holders, this expanded 12-gate footprint will officially open up to foreign nationals entering and exiting Sri Lanka.
The new E-Gate system moves Sri Lanka’s main international gateway into a fully contactless, modern border management era. Key technological features include:
Integrating eight additional high-tech units into BIA’s existing terminal space is no simple task. Senior airport operations officials and engineers are executing architectural adaptations to fit these biometric units into the terminal layout without interrupting the intense midnight rush of international flight arrivals.
Once fully operational, these E-Gates will significantly reduce immigration congestion, ensuring that your transition from your flight to meeting your “Lanka Untamed” chauffeur-guide is quicker than ever before.
Traveler Tip: When arriving at BIA in late 2026 and beyond, ensure you have your biometric passport ready to take full advantage of the automated lanes for a seamless airport exit.
With digital visas, automated airport gates, and instant local connectivity, Sri Lanka is making it easier than ever to dive into your dream island journey. Ready to explore? View our bespoke 12-day itineraries today.
