Streamlining your journey from the airport to the wild with the latest ETA updates and fee-waiver info.

Stepping off the plane and into the tropical warmth of Sri Lanka should be effortless. As of January 2026, the Sri Lankan government has streamlined the entry process, making it faster than ever to get through the terminal and into the “Lanka Untamed” wilderness.

The Golden Rule: Mandatory Pre-Departure ETA

In a major update for 2026, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is now essentially mandatory before you board your flight. While emergency “on-arrival” counters exist at the airport, many airlines now require proof of an approved ETA during check-in at your departure city. To avoid any stress, always apply via the only official government portal.Official Sri Lanka ETA Portal: eta.gov.lk

  • Validity: The standard tourist ETA generally grants a 30-day stay with double-entry privileges—perfect for those exploring the island’s diverse regions.
  • Processing Time: Most approvals arrive within 24 hours, but we recommend applying at least 72 hours before departure to be safe.

The 2026 “Free Visa” Boom

To celebrate a new era of tourism, Sri Lanka has expanded its Visa-Free Access to 40 major markets as of January 2026. Travelers from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, India, and China can now obtain their 30-day tourist ETA free of charge.

Crucial Note: “Free of charge” does not mean you can skip the paperwork. Even if your fee is $0, you must still apply for and receive your official ETA approval online before you arrive.

Digital Arrival Cards: The New Standard

Say goodbye to the blue paper forms usually handed out on the plane. All travelers are now required to complete the Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours of landing. This is a separate step from your visa and ensures a paperless, “scan-and-go” experience at the immigration desk. You can complete it here: Official Immigration Portal: immigration.gov.lk

Final Departure Checklist

Before you head to the airport, ensure you have these four items ready to show the immigration officer:

  • Passport: Valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
  • Approved ETA: Either a printout or a digital copy on your phone from eta.gov.lk.
  • Digital Arrival Card: Confirmation of completion via immigration.gov.lk.
  • Return Ticket: Proof of your scheduled journey out of Sri Lanka.

With these digital steps completed, the only thing left to do is meet your chauffeur-guide at the arrival hall and begin your 12-day odyssey into the heart of the island.
